About Westend Parish and this website
West End is about 5 miles to the east of Southampton in Hampshire. Once a tiny hamlet it has now grown enormously due in part to the arrival of the M27 in 1978 and need for additional housing, i.e. the development of Chartwell Green and also the Barbe Baker area.
Despite its recent growth, West End is still known as ’the village’ to many residents.
In the past West End was known for its agriculture, market gardening, much of this on land lost to recent development, and also its paper mill on the River Itchen - Gaters Mill which in 1686 belonged to a company called White Papermakers. Although Gaters Mill is now part of Southampton, many see this as a gate way to the parish of West End.
One of West End’s land marks is Hatch Grange – 30 acres of parkland was purchased by the Parish Council in 1938 for the benefit of the residents. Hatch Grange has achieved SINC status – site of importance of nature conservation, which the Parish Council and the Friends of Hatch Grange (a volunteer group) maintain. The lower field of Hatch Grange is home to one of the best examples of a Liquid Amber tree anywhere in the country.
There are other open spaces in West End which are owned and maintained by the Parish Council, for example Moorgreen Recreation Ground and Barnsland. Itchen Valley Countryside Park and Telegraph Woods, owned and maintained by Eastleigh Borough Council, are also in the Parish
West End is also home to the Hampshire County Cricket Club and its venue, The Rose Bowl, attracts many visitors.
